Interesting comments! Hi splat you must be from a different area because RRV's would have plenty of time on their hands to explain things, such as, hours on roadside standby and most of the day on station. My student asked me what the main difference between a RRV and ambulance was. I told the student that one takes patients to hospital and the other doesn't. But hey, that's only down here and as I said I don't know about other areas. No offence intended.

No I donâ??t work for WAST despite coming from Wales. Our cars are fairly busy with the practitionerâ??s car doing 5-6 jobs a day. The RRV in the cities go from job to job. The big difference between Wales and WMAS cars are only backed up to, A Cats and practitioners can stand vehicles down and book alternative methods of transport if they donâ??t need to go in straight away.

better range of jobs on ambulance
im a student and ive been out with mentors on the car and the ambulances....definatly agree that ambulances allow more exposure to the job and different experiences. i have seen a much wider range of situations since being out on the ambulance. saying that i think any experience on the road is important. as students we need as much exposure to the job as possible!!!!

Yes I agree I had a first placement, first year student with me on a car last month. I felt a bit sorry for her as she didnt really know what an ambulance does, yet alone an ECP. We only did really poorly patients and I didnt have time to explain things to her.

i personally dont agree with the students nothing personal but i think paramedics should be trained from within the trust. staff have been waiting years for a chance to have the training. recruite from within. join and do PCS first and learn the people skills and topography which is also important in our job.

Students and RRV's
A few students have mentioned that RRV work doesn't give them enough exposure. Kind of wrapped in cotton wool. I've also noticed that some students think that RRV's are official first responders and can't make decisions on scene - sending everyone into hospital. And before anyone starts, that was not a dig at RRV's it was an observation as to the 'policy' and 'hpc' situation we all face.

I agree students should encounter a full range of ambulance placements. Unfortunately in my locality most of the mentors are on the cars. The university needs to ensure a proper mix of placements. I have been on a car for two years now and think it would be good for me to spend some time on a truck. We have two relief shifts in our rota I would love to be able to do them on a truck.

RRV's Mentors
I'm Not a student but I notice there are a lot of students being put out there with RRV's which is great. but they are not seeing the full job.

They need to be out there on the Ambulance from the beginning of the call through to the end..
