AN AMBULANCE driving trainer based at Derriford has quit his job after being caught drink-driving.

Jonathon Knight, of Beaumont Road, St Judes, appeared at Plymouth Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Knight, aged 33, was stopped and breathalysed by police in a Volvo car in his own street on the evening of August 27.

He was found to have 89 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the limit is 35 microgrammes.

Plymouth magistrates fined him £350, ordered him to pay the victim surcharge of £15 and court costs of £43.

He was disqualified from driving for 17 months, which would be reduced by 17 weeks if he completes an additional driving course.

A spokesman for the South West Ambulance Service confirmed Knight had resigned his post at the training college in Morlaix Drive, Derriford, where he worked as a training manager, teaching staff how to drive emergency vehicles.

The spokesman said: "Mr Knight has tendered his resignation. He would have faced disciplinary action if he had remained, which would have resulted in his dismissal.

"We are sorry to lose him, but his behaviour was unacceptable and the service takes a very strong stance on drink driving.

"Mr Knight was driving a leased car at the time of the incident and not a service vehicle."
