THE number of violent attacks on ambulance staff in North Wales has fallen slightly over the past 12 months.

Throughout Wales as a whole, however, the number of incidents has risen slightly, according to the just-released figures.

In May Health Minister Edwina Hart announced new measures to protect NHS staff from violence and aggression and appointed David Francis, a former Deputy Chief Constable of South Wales Police, to oversee their introduction.

He is currently the chairman of Cwm Taff NHS Trust.

Between June, 2006, and May, 2007, a total of 54 incidents of violence or abuse against ambulance staff was recorded in North Wales, but in the following 12 months the figure was 49.

Whilst the number of incidents resulting in injury fell from 21 to 12, the non-injury incidents rose by four to 37.

Under the Welsh Assembly’s campaign trusts are asked to work with the Crown Prosecution Service to ensure that offenders are prosecuted, employers are asked to encourage victims to gividence for prosecutions, and staff should have free access to solicitors to pursue prosecutions and recover any costs incurred as a result of violent and aggressive acts at work.

Have they reduced or is it staff can't be bothered to report it anymore.

The last 6 months has seen those who abuse and attack ambulance staff let off with no more than finger pointing. In fact on one occasion we had to keep hearing how traumatic it had been for one of the accused. Not a mention of how traumatic it had been for the ambulance crew.
