Taxi driver David Robinson collapsed at home during the night and when his wife Sharon dialled 999 she was told an ambulance would be on its way.

When one failed to arrive after half an hour his distraught wife rang again and was told: "You could have to wait up to two hours".

Mrs Robinson ended up phoning her mother who lives nearby and she took the couple in her car on the ten- minute drive to Rotherham District Hospital, South Yorkshire.

Doctors immediately admitted Mr Robinson to the cardiac ward and confirmed he had suffered a heart attack. He was kept in for five days for treatment.

Mr Robinson, 59, said: "I could have died if my wife hadn't driven me to hospital."
