Ambulance Joyride

A US man stole an ambulance - without realising a patient and paramedic were still inside.

Nicholas Pontillo, 24, from Lake Villa, Illinois, had been drinking heavily when he took the vehicle for a joyride after slipping into the ambulance while paramedics were treating a skier with an injured knee in the back. They had the emergency brake on. That's one thing we always do for safety reasons.

However, the vehicle's emergency brake was on and he ended up driving it around the car park, before eventually being arrested by sheriff's deputies.

Dane County emergency management specialist Carrie Meier said the theft attempt had been halted because the paramedics followed procedure as expected.

He said: "They had the emergency brake on. That's one thing we always do for safety reasons."

Pontillo has been charged with vehicle theft and may also face a charge of drink driving.
